Know kings of cricket who never played World Cup

London, May 31: The ICC World Cup is the biggest stage every cricketer dreams of playing.

But not every player who manages to reach the international level fulfills the dream of representing his country at the World Cup.

Let us take a look at a few unfortunate souls who could not play at the World Cup despite being star players in their respective national teams.

VVS Laxman: One of the best batsmen in the world during his heydays, VVS Laxman was a member of the legendary Indian Test batting line-up that also included Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and Virender Sehwag among others.

He even made it a habit of reserving his best for the superpower of the game – Australia.

He was nicknamed ‘Very Very Special’ Laxman for his Test figures of 8,781 runs in 134 matches.

That was however, not enough to secure him a berth in India’s World Cup squad and the Hyderabadi star never got a chance to play at the most prestigious stage the game could offer.

Stuart MacGill: Had Stuart MacGill been born in any other cricket playing nation, a slot as the main spinner in the national team would have been an unquestioned guarantee.

But having been born in Australia, that too as a contemporary of the legendary Shane Warne, this gifted leg-spinner was forced to miss out on the chance to wear his national jersey at the World Cup.

Laxmipathy Balaji: Having made his ODI debut against the West Indies in 2002, Laxmipathy Balaji quickly became one of the main pacers in the Indian team.

However, he never managed to secure a berth in the World Cup squad.

Murali Kartik: One of the main spinners in the Indian squad along with Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble, Murali Kartik was one of the best in the world during his time.

But he never managed to make it to the World Cup squad.

Alastair Cook: One of the best batsmen of his generation, Alastair Cook represented England in 161 Test matches.

However, he took time to settle down, which probably prompted the English selectors to omit him from the World Cup squad.
